Step-by-step explanation

Here oxygen(O) has lone so it will attach on H+ of HI and H+ will attach with O atom to form oxonium ion.

As O is more electronegative atom, so it don't want to hold the positive charge so it will break bond to create 2o cation which is stable.
Now with this cation I ion is added.
(3) On the other oxygen atom similar method is applied.
