JEE Main 2024Coordination Compounds Question with Solution

JEE Main 2024 (01 Feb Shift 1)

Question

Given below are two statements:
Statement (I): A solution of NiH2O62+ is green in colour.
Statement (II): A solution of Ni(CN)42- is colourless.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

Choose an option

Correct answer
B

Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

Step-by-step explanation

In NiH2O62+H2O is a weak field ligand. Therefore, there are unpaired electrons in Ni2+. In this complex, the d electrons from the lower energy level can be excited to the higher energy level i.e., the possibility of d-dtransition is present. Hence, NiH2O62+ is coloured.

In NiCN42-, the electrons are all paired as CN- is a strong field ligand. Therefore, d-d transition is not possible in NiCN42-. Hence, it is colourless.

NiH2O6+2Green colour solution due to d-d transition.

Ni(CN)4-2is diamagnetic and it is colourless.
