JEE Main 2019Redox Reactions Question with Solution

JEE Main 2019 (10 Jan Shift 2)

Question

In the reaction of oxalate with permanganate in acidic medium, the number of electrons involved in producing one molecule of CO2 is:

Choose an option

Show full solutionCorrect option: C
Correct answer
C1

Step-by-step explanation

2 MnO4-+5C2O42-+16H+10 CO2+2 Mn2++8H2O

C goes from +3 oxidation state to +4 oxidation state.

Total 10 e- are transferred for 10 molecules of CO2.

Hence, for 1 molecule of CO2, only one e- is transferred.
So, number of electrons involved for 1 molecule of CO2  is 1.
