JEE Main 2023Ellipse Question with Solution

JEE Main 2023 (24 Jan Shift 1)

Question

Let C be the largest circle centred at 2,0 and inscribed in the ellipse x236+y216=1. If 1,α lies on C, then 10α2 is equal to ______

Enter your answer

Show full solutionCorrect answer: 118
Correct answer
118

Step-by-step explanation

Given:

x236+y216=1

Let any point on the ellipse be P6cosθ, 4sinθ.

Equation of normal of ellipse at any point P is

3secθx2cosecθy=10

This normal is also the normal of the circle passing through the point 2,0.

So, 6secθ=10 or sinθ=0 (Not possible)

cosθ=35 and sinθ=45

So, point P185,165.

So, the largest radius of circle r=3205=645

So the equation of circle x-22+y2=645

This circle is passing through 1,α, hence

1-22+α2=645

α2=595

10α2=118.
