Question

Let a vertical tower AB of height 2h stands on a horizontal ground. Let from a point P on the ground a man can see upto height h of the tower with an angle of elevation 2α. When from P, he moves a distance d in the direction of AP, he can see the top B of the tower with an angle of elevation α. If d=7h, then tanα is equal to

C7-2

Step-by-step explanation

Given a vertical tower AB of height 2h stands on a horizontal ground and from a point P on the ground a man can see upto height h of the tower with an angle of elevation 2α. When from P, he moves a distance d in the direction of AP, he can see the top B of the tower with an angle of elevation α. If d=7h, then tanα is equal to

Now on plotting the value in diagram we have,

Now in PAC

tan2α=hx .....1

And in HAB we have

tanα=2hx+7h

tanα=2hhcot2α+7h from equation 1

tanα=21-tan2α2tanα+7

Now put tanα=t and on simplifying we get,

t=21-t22t+7

t1-t22t+7=2

1-t22+7t=2

t2-27t+3=0

t=7-2

 tanα=7-2
