JEE Main 2023 (13 Apr Shift 1)

Question

Let m1 and m2 be the slopes of the tangents drawn from the point P4,1 to the hyperbola H:y225-x216=1 If Q is the point from which the tangents drawn to H have slopes m1 and m2 and they make positive intercepts α and β on the x-axis, then (PQ)2αβ is equal to _______.

Correct answer
8

Step-by-step explanation

Given that H:y225-x216=1

Equation of tangent to the hyperbola is:y=mx+25-16m2

Passes through 4,1

y=mx+25-16m2

1=4m+25-16m2

4m2-m-3

m1=1,m2=-34

m1=1,  m2=34

Equation of tangents with slopes 1 & 34

y=x-3.......i

y=34x-4......ii

i & ii Q(-4,-7)

P(4,1)

(PQ)2=82+82=128

On converting i and ii in intercept form we get,

iα=3, iiβ=163

(PQ)2αβ=1283×163=8

Hence this is the required option.
