JEE Main 2019Properties of Triangles Question with Solution

JEE Main 2019 (08 Apr Shift 2)

Question

If the lengths of the sides of a triangle are in A.P and the greatest angle is double the smallest, then a ratio of lengths of the sides of this triangle is:

Choose an option

Show full solutionCorrect option: D
Correct answer
D4:5:6

Step-by-step explanation

Let a<b<c are three sides and θ is the smallest angle. Hence three angles are θ,π-3θ,2θ
Given, 2b=a+c2sinB=sinA+sinC (using sine rule)
2sin3θ=sinθ+sin2θ
23sinθ-4sin3θ=sinθ1+2cosθ
6-81-cos2θ=1+2cosθ
cosθ=34,-12 ( -12 is rejected since θ is acute)
a:b:c=sinA:sinB:sinC=sinθ:sin3θ:  sin2θ
=1:3-4sin2θ:2cosθ=1:4cos2θ-1:2cosθ
=4:5:6
