JEE Main 2021Statistics Question with Solution

JEE Main 2021 (25 Jul Shift 2)

Question

The first of the two samples in a group has 100 items with mean 15 and standard deviation 3. If the whole group has 250 items with mean 15.6 and standard deviation 13.44, then the standard deviation of the second sample is:

Correct answer
C4

Step-by-step explanation

We have, number of terms in the first group n1=100 with their mean X1=15 and number of terms in whole group is n1+n2=250 and their mean X=15.6.

Variance of first groupV1x=9 and whole group is Varx=13.44.

Now, σ2=n1σ12+n2σ22n1+n2+n1n2n1+n22x¯1-x¯22

and n2=150,x¯2=16,V2(x)=σ2

Therefore, 13.44=100×9+150×σ22250+100×1502502×1

σ22=16

σ2=4
