JEE Main 2019Statistics Question with Solution

JEE Main 2019 (09 Apr Shift 2)

Question

The mean and the median of the following ten numbers in increasing order 10, 22, 26, 29, 34, x, 42, 67, 70, y are 42 and 35 respectively, then yx is equal to:

Choose an option

Correct answer
B73

Step-by-step explanation

Since, number of observations are even n=10

Hence, the median is =n2th term+n2+1th term2=5th term+6th term2

Thus, median =34+x2

34+x2=35

 x=36   ...i

And, mean=sum of termsnumber of terms

10+22+26+29+34+x+42+67+70+y10=42

  x+y+300=420

 x+y=120   ...ii

Put the value of x from i in ii, to get

36+y=120

y=84

yx=8436=73.
