JEE Main 2022Statistics Question with Solution

JEE Main 2022 (26 Jun Shift 1)

Question

The mean of the numbers a,b,8,5,10 is 6 and their variance is 6.8. If M is the mean deviation of the numbers about the mean, then 25M is equal to

Choose an option

Show full solutionCorrect option: A
Correct answer
A60

Step-by-step explanation

Mean x¯=a+6+8+5+105=6 (given)

a+b=7     ...i

Variance =xi2n-x¯2=a2+b2+82+52+1025-62=6.8 (given)

a2+b2=25     ...ii

on solving equations i & ii, we get a=3, b=4

Now, Mean deviation about Mean M=xi-x¯n

3-6+4-6+8-6+5-6+10-65

 3+2+2+1+45=125

  M=12525M=60.
