JEE Main 2016Three Dimensional Geometry Question with Solution

JEE Main 2016 (10 Apr Online)

Question

ABC is a triangle in a plane with vertices A2, 3, 5, B-1, 3, 2 and Cλ, 5, μ . If the median through A is equally inclined to the coordinate axes, then the value of λ3+μ3+5 is

Choose an option

Show full solutionCorrect option: B
Correct answer
B1348

Step-by-step explanation

Let coordinate of mid-point of BC is point D, then

Dλ-12, 4, μ+22

And, A2,3,5

Therefore, direction ratios of AD are

λ-12-2, 4-3,μ+22-5

λ-52, 1,μ-82

Hence, direction cosines of AD are

λ-52λ-522+1+μ-822, 1λ-522+1+μ-822,μ-82λ-522+1+μ-822

Since, median AD is making equal angles with coordinate axes, therefore

λ-52λ-522+1+μ-822=1λ-522+1+μ-822=μ-82λ-522+1+μ-822

λ-52=1=μ-82

λ=7  and  μ=10

λ3+μ3+5=1348
