JEE Main 2016 (03 Apr)

Question

A galvanometer having a coil resistance of 100 Ω gives a full scale deflection, when a current of 1 mA is passed through it. The value of the resistance, which can convert this galvanometer into ammeter giving a full scale deflection for a current of 10 A, is:

Choose an option

Show full solutionCorrect option: C
Correct answer
C0.01 Ω

Step-by-step explanation

As shown in figure a shunt resistance S is connected parallel to the galvanometer to convert it into an ammeter. Let G is the resistance of the galvanometer.

Where G = 100 Ω and full-scale deflection current is Ig = 10 mA = 10×10-3 A

For galvanometer Vg = Ig G = 10×10-3 ×10 = 0.1 volt

From the figure, the shunt is parallel to galvanometer

VS = Vg IS S = Vg   ...1

For ammeter full-scale deflection current is

IS =I-Ig  10 A

 from equation 1

10 S = 0·1 S = 0·01 Ω
