JEE Main 2019Motion In One Dimension Question with Solution

JEE Main 2019 (09 Apr Shift 1)

Question

A ball is thrown vertically up (taken as +z-axis ) from the ground. The correct momentum-height (p-h) diagram is:

Choose an option

Show full solutionCorrect option: C
Correct answer
C

Step-by-step explanation

If the ball was thrown with initial velocity u , then its velocity at height 'h' can be written as.
v=u2-2gh
Its linear momentum, p=mv=mu2-2gh
Or  p2=m2u2-2m2gh
The graph between p & h will be a parabola.
In motion when particle was going up, its velocity is positive and decreasing with height and so is the linear momentum. When it reaches the maximum height, the velocity and linear momentum will be zero. Again, it will start to fall back, the velocity and linear momentum will increase but will have negative value.
