JEE Main 2020 (05 Sep Shift 2)

Question

A radioactive nucleus decays by two different processes. The half-life for the first process is 10 s and that for the second is 100 s. The effective half-life of the nucleus is close to:

Correct answer
A9 s

Step-by-step explanation

Using the equation of radioactive decay law,

-dNdt=λ1N+λ2N  ...(1)

-dNdt=λ1+λ2N  ...(2)

Where,

-dNdt is the rate of decay

λ1, λ2 are decay constant for two different processes

N is the number of atoms.

Now applying the decay law for the combine process, we get

-dNdt=λeffN  ...(3)

Equating equation (1) and (2) we get

λeff=λ1+λ2  ...(4)

Now the half life of the radioactive nucleus is given by,

λ=ln2T  ...(5)

Where, T is the half life of the radioactive nucleus

Using equation (5) equation (4) becomes,

ln2T=ln2T1+ln2T2

1T=1T1+1T2

1T=110+1100=11100

T=100119 s
