Chlorine gas was used earlier for bleaching paper. Now a days, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with suitable catalyst are used. Earlier solvents like tetrachloroethylene were used in dry cleaning of clothes but they pollute the ground water and are carcinogenic.
